Benefitting country(ies): Ukraine
On 18 March 2022, the Living Heritage Entity organized a first meeting with key living heritage stakeholders from Ukraine and neighboring countries hosting Ukrainian refugees to discuss how best to support the safeguarding of living heritage of Ukraine. The nexus between living heritage and education was identified as a priority area for action.
This project seeks to enhance awareness of living heritage among Ukrainian school children by developing a resource kit for primary and secondary school teachers on how to integrate living heritage in school-based education in Ukraine. Built on resources developed under a joint UNESCO-European Union project, the project will adapt the existing resource kit on teaching and learning with living heritage for the Ukrainian context. Integrating living heritage in teaching approaches would furthermore demonstrate the role that culture can play in emergency contexts to foster identity, reinforce cultural diversity under threat and facilitate recovery.
By targeting Ukrainian primary and secondary school teachers, this activity would primarily benefit Ukrainian children and their families affected by the war. The resource kit for Ukrainian teachers will be pilot tested in at least 10 ASPnet schools in Ukraine. The project and the resource kit will furthermore be presented during several webinars targeting Ukrainian teachers, ICH NGOs and other key ICH stakeholders.
The project will be implemented by the Development Centre ‘Democracy through Culture’, a non-governmental organization accredited under the 2003 Convention, in close cooperation with the UNESCO Chair in Scientific Education, the UNESCO Associated Schools Network in Ukraine and other partners.
